Discussion #1 — Should people be required to prove their citizenship before they can vote?
started on 2008-05-13@02:13:23(PM/UTC) [open]
Twenty states in the U.S. are considering passing laws that would force people to prove their citizenship before they can vote. Would these laws reduce turnout by eligible voters? Does it pose a serious threat to democracy as critics suggest?

PRO: Strict voter ID requirements is needed to prevent fraud

CON: Voting by noncitizens is not a problem. Illegal immigrants do their best to remain in the shadows, to avoid attracting government attention and deportation. Barriers at the polls affect the poor, racial minorities and students — groups that experts say are less likely than average to have driver’s licenses, and that are more likely than average to vote Democratic.

Voting is a right established in the constitution covering citizens.  Non-citizens do not have a voting right under the constitution.  Requiring proof of citizenship is not only appropriate it strengthens U.S. law.

To be honest, I think we'd be a better world leader if the world had input in our presidential elections.  As an American public, having such input would be invaluable.
